This was my first concept photoshoot taken in August 2017.
I had heard a song by Bat For Lashes called ‘Sleep Alone‘ years previous and loved the earthy, slightly spiritual, feeling it had. It inspired images in my mind of witches and creepy girls flitting through the forest. I wondered how I could bring something from my imagination to life.
As I continued thinking about it an idea formed in mind: two sisters, around the Victorian era, arriving in Australia with a reputation mired in dark entities. For me I thought it should be a bit of an odyssey through the Australian bush (a spiritual entity all of its own for me) led by two young women. My thought was that as their journey begins they are searching for a place to belong, a home. As they enter the bush they get lost, and things start getting a bit creepy, they become a part of the bush as much as it becomes a part of them. Finally they are found, they face their fears and harness the light. Yes I know, its all very metaphorical, but isn’t life just full of them?!
I wanted it very much to be about empowerment of women. Women throughout history have often been popped into little neat boxes of expectations and when we break those boundaries we are silenced, shunned or ridiculed. How, I thought, can I show that even though yeah they might appear to be a bit witch-y, that the reality is maybe they have just been misunderstood? Maybe they were so powerful and fearless that in their search for truth and home and understanding, they were simply underestimated? Its often said that people fear most what they do not know, or what they simply don’t understand.
I chose the title of I AM FOUND to give a sense of finality. This is their ultimate truth, that even through hardship or confusion that they have found themselves, and isn’t that really what we are all trying to find?
Enjoy, feedback always welcome.
